EXPANDING TRADITIONAL PRUNE PRODUCTION AREAS

Agri Management Africa is instrumental in expanding the production of prunes beyond the traditional production area of Witzenberg. At the same time, new cultivars are established that promise to produce good yields and quality. In the Laingsburg area, large areas have already been established and the result is very good. At present, it is planned to establish an experimental orchard on Prince Albert with Dried Fruit Technical Services. All available cultivars will be planted and management boarding will be done contractually by Agri Management Africa.

A relatively new expansion by Wilhelm Gerber in the Komga near Kareedouw is illustrated with photographs. It is the first bearing of three and four year old trees. The results are promising and hopefully will also encourage other producers to consider prunes as an alternative to both the fresh and dried markets.
